As part of an integrated solution,
theGatesMegaSys hydraulic hose and
coupling systemoffers a combinationof
technology, performance and flexibility.
For impulse life, thewire-braidhose is
tripled to 600,000 cycles and the spiral-wire
is doubled to1,000,000 cycles, that’s three
and two times the SAE specification.
Gates conducts its tests at tight bend
radii; the spiral-wirehose is up tohalf the
SAEminimumbend and thewire-braid
hose toone third theminimumbend.
All tests areperformed in excess of the
maximumworkingpressures by up to
133%. Thismeans extendedhose life,more
flexibility, easier, tighter routingandan
overall lower cost the company said.
Themajority of hydraulic hose failures
occur at the couplings, due toblow-offs or
leaks. Gates has designedandengineered
robustMegaCrimp couplings specifically
to crimponGatesMegaSys hoses for
guaranteed leak-freeperformance.

According to the
company, aprimary
sourceof hydraulic
hose failure is abrasion
resulting from cuts,
friction causedby othermovinghoses,
or objects in theoperating environment.
Hose-to-hose abrasions are likely to show
upwhere a lengthof hose travels through
aboomor bulkhead, or along framework.
Erosionof the covermaterial can alsobe
causedby non-compatible fluids such as
toxic chemicals, acids, detergents andnon-
compatiblehydraulic fluids.
Inmost cases, abrasion
problems canbe spotted
during routine inspections,
and replacement initiated
beforeamajor failure
occurs. Bundlinghoses
together that flex in
the samedirection can
help solvehose-to-hose
abrasion. Clamps, bent-tube
couplings, plastic ties, clamp
collars, springguards and
nylon sleeving canbeused
to keephoseaway from
abrasionor exposure to
non-compatible fluids.
Protect thehose cover
by usingnylon andurethane
sleevingor springguards. Coversmade
with special rubber compounds can
provide improved abrasion resistance, like
Gates XtraTuff covers. Othersmadeof
special rubber or plastic compounds have
been tested to last up to 300 times longer,
