ACCESS in ACTION

Melbourne-based high voltage

electrical construction company JamCo

Constructions (JamCo) recently bought

a Manitou 160 ATJ + work platform to

serve the electrical distribution market.

The ‘+’ designation indicates a higher

basket capacity of 400kgs (vs the standard

230kgs) and larger basket size. There is

a modest offset in reduced reach (8.95m

vs 9.1m) but the prime requirement for

JamCo was to have two workers and

a full complement of tools working at

height, and to have a machine capable of

travelling around construction sites.

JamCo specified a larger than normal

(5kVa vs 3.5kVa) on board generator.

Both the standard and ‘+’ variant of the

160 ATJ have a maximum floor height

Getting high in the high country

of 14.25m, translating to an effective

working height of over 16m.

This could normally be a source of

friction between a supplier and customer,

but Manitou Australia and its dealer

NTP Forklifts (NTP) strengthened the

relationship between JamCo and the

suppliers.

JamCo was kept up to date with the

progress of the order and Manitou

Australia contacted JamCo directly

to advise the delay lay with the

manufacturer’s supplier and not with the

dealer, was being actively addressed and

in the interim hire costs of a replacement

machine would be covered.

A team of nine, with a core of Genie

employees, supported by family members

and partners, are in rigorous training and

will contest the next Tough Mudder event

to be staged in Melbourne.

Victorian Service Manager John Jerkovich

is the force behind the team.

“We were impressed with the inaugural

Tough Mudder event staged at Phillip

Island,” John said. “A few of us got

together and thought it would be good to

put a Genie team together and train up for

the next event.”

Tough Mudder events are hardcore 20km-

long obstacle courses designed by British

Special Forces to test all around strength,

stamina, mental grit, and camaraderie.

From John’s initial concept, the team

has evolved to include Mark Cowley, Tim

Merritt, Adam Cordwell, Leanne Southall
