ACCESS in ACTION

Nationwide Platforms’ SkySiren is a

retro-fit solution designed to reduce

the risk of injury or fatality to operators

involved in a trapping or crushing incident

in a boom-type Mobile Elevating Work

Platform (MEWP).

The system works by reacting to the

body of a crushed operator against the

MEWP’s control panel, immediately

stopping the motion of the machine, while

simultaneously alerting colleagues to the

incident with an emergency alarm and

flashing beacon.

Nationwide Platforms’ Executive Director

– Business Development and Key Accounts,

Mick Ledden, said: “Critically, the retrofit

system can be affixed to the vast majority of

boom lifts already on the market, including

Genie and JLG equipment.”

The award-winning anti-entrapment

solution was launched in the UK at the end

of 2011.

The system will undergo trials in the US

powered access market.

Now, the system is set to be unveiled in

Australia.

“Even prior to the launch of the SkySiren

New horizons for anti-entrapment safety

When activated, the SkySiren stops the movement

of the platform immediately, while simultaneously

alerting colleagues to the incident with a flashing

light and alarm

in the UK it has been our long-term aim

to make our innovative approach to anti-

entrapment available to the widest possible

audience. The safety of the end-users of

powered access is the responsibility of

everyone in the industry and we have a

duty to ensure all possible steps are taken

to tackle issues associated with work at

height,” Mick Ledden said.

“We believe our retro-fit solution

provides a safeguard against entrapment

that can be most easily and universally

applied to the vast majority of boom lifts

already on the market. This means operator

safety doesn’t have to wait until investment

in new equipment, instead it means a

practical solution is available now.”

SkySiren received the Construction Health

and Safety Group’s (CHSG) Beaumont Safety

Trophy and contributed to Nationwide

Platforms being awarded the Contribution

to Safe Working at Height accolade at the

International Awards for Powered Access

(IAPAs).
