Games tendering;
temporary
structures and
review
president's
message
At this time of year I am always
looking forward to catching up with
everyone at the Convention; it will, again, be a great program,
with new friends to make and new things to see.
Thanks to all that registered to the Commonwealth Games EOI.
The response was very strong, however it has been decided the
member’s consortium will not proceed. A notice has been sent
to all members who registered their interest. (The HRIA will
continue to assist members with any queries they may have.)
A few members felt the Association assisting the members to
form a consortium was akin to the Association in fact becoming
a competitor in the tender process. This was never the intention;
the initiative was designed to assist members. To keep the
contracts local, the consortium was to be administered and
controlled by the members not the HRIA. The Association will
still be assisting all members by providing updates on tenders
and encouraging joint ventures.
We have also been very fortunate to secure Mark Cutler who
is head of the GOLDOC overlay team to talk at this year’s
Convention conference. Mark is going to present on what the
overlay team will be looking for in the tender responses and also
how packages will be split up. Mark’s presentation alone will be
worth the cost of attending the convention.
We will also have presentations encompassing what is
required to obtain permits for temporary structures in each
state, highlighting the different approaches. Another area of
particular interest is the insurance of temporary structures and
who is liable in the event of loss or damage; we will also have a
presentation on this subject.
The new weighting guide is now available on the web site.
At the request of members, publication was held until the end
of the main events season. Further details on the proposed
temporary structures erector's course will be available soon; we
are currently awaiting the outcome of the VBA review of their
qualification requirements.
The Temporary Structures Standard will be reviewed in
September, so I would love to hear your thoughts on how this
document might be improved. As usual, I am sure there are a lot
of issues I haven’t covered and I am always happy to hear from
members about any concerns. See you at the Convention!
