“While DC (direct current) generators
were the first on the scene and were
widely adopted in many different
applications, the majority of equipment
operating in all applications including
mining has been based around AC supply
voltage.
"Australia’s mains power supplies are AC
(alternative current).But DC generators
are now enjoying a renaissance, being
more appropriate sources in a changing
world where priorities are greater
efficiency and lower fuel costs,” Darryl
said.
“Unlike an AC generator, a DC generator
often does not require a rectifier/inverter,
which reduces the cost and difficulty of
running. DC alternators work better with
today’s high quality LED lighting and
energy efficient hybrid power systems.
“The re-emergence of DC can be seen
in mobile lighting tower use and battery
charging.
DC generators power back into favour with the market
The electrical currents AC/DC have presented a conundrum among those seeking an
appropriate power generator, Darryl Hanna, Sales Manager at Sincro said.
“In battery charging applications a DC
generator offers reduced equipment
count, increased efficiency and lower
operating costs.
“The operator can directly charge the
batteries from the generator and therefore
doesn’t require a separate rectifier/
charging unit. The air conditioning
systems normally installed with the
rectifier for cooling can be removed.
Without these devices efficiency loss
through these devices is avoided.
“With the development and
improvements of LED lighting, mobile
lighting towers are shifting to DC
generators to directly power the hugely
efficient LED lights, and IWE Group is
rapidly becoming the industry standard
for LED lighting towers,” Darryl said.
“With the lower power requirements of
LED over older lighting technologies, the
size of the genset (a generator paired
with an engine) can be reduced, having
a positive effect on operating costs with
lower fuel requirements.
“As the DC generator is not sensitive to
frequency requirements like 50Hz in AC
systems, the generators can be operated
at different speed levels to optimise the
engine/generator matching and their
efficiency levels.
“Extra-low voltage Sincro DC generators
operating at 24V and 48VDC are safer,
(minimising or eliminating electrocution
OH&S risk),” Darryl said.
Sincro generators are manufactured
in Italy and are high quality and are
designed for applications requiring 24
& 48 VDC low voltage supply. Sincro
DC power solutions are suitable both
as battery chargers and emergency
power supplies of auxiliary circuits, in
the telecommunication, transport and
industrial fields.
