Access Hire invests in Newcastle’s future
and expands national footprint
To service the growing
needs of the NSW
construction and mining
industries, Access Group
Australia, a Finalist in the
national HRIA Excellence
Awards, has established
an on the ground Access
Hire Australia distribution
division and facility in the
City of Newcastle.
Access Hire, a specialist
division of Access Group,
supplies a range of Genie
and JLG elevating work
platforms, materials handling equipment
and lighting towers and generators.
Located in Hexham, Access Hire’s
latest premises, which span 10,000sqm
comprising commercial offices and
workshop space, will also provide a
progressive lean management production
processes.
According to Tom Fraser, Group General
Manager for Access Group, the NSW
facility will deliver east coast clients with
an improved service for hiring and buying
quality EWPs.
“Strategically the time to set up shop
in Newcastle was right; with the NSW
government’s planned revitalisation
and urban renewal of the city it made
good sense for us to expand our national
footprint.”
As remote project specialists, and long-
time suppliers to construction companies
and mining projects, Access Hire’s success
has been built on the backbone of strategic
partnerships and a capacity to deliver new
equipment with an average age of just 2.9
years, together with full back-up services
and customer support.
With 180 employees Access Hire has
brought grassroots competition to the
region. David Tripodi is spearheading the
operation.
“The biggest advantage to NSW customers
is we offer the whole solution; from
hire and purchase through to specialist
transportation and equipment service and
repairs, including OEM spare parts and
certified training.”

Erecting an observation wheel near
Washington DC presented itself as a
logistical challenge. Being situated at
the head of a long and narrow pier, was
just one of many obstacles to overcome.
Cianbro Constructions, a contracting
company which has a good reputation
for handling tricky projects utilised the
new Genie SX-180 boom lift with 180
feet of vertical reach.
The 'Capital Wheel', as the structure
erected by Cianbro is known, stands at
175 feet and offers views of the White
House, Capital Building, National Mall
and the Arlington National Cemetery.
Work on the Capital Wheel started with
the installation
of a 150 tonne
steel grid base
structure. The
legs were erected,
followed by
the installation
of other ride
components
such as the axle,
spokes, ring
beams and lights.
In a conventional
location Cianbro
would have had no problem accessing
the axles and spokes with a standard 85
foot boom lift. The nature of the work
site dictated on one side the boom lift
would be set back more than 85 feet and
needed to reach 90 feet into the air and
over the top and in-between the legs.
Genie was debuting the SX-180 boom
lift and made one of the first SX-180s to
come off the production line available.
On site the crew dubbed the SX-180 as
the ‘Monster Lift’. It proved instrumental
in the assembly of the tower legs, but
one of the crucial areas of construction
involved setting the wheel’s spokes into
the hub or axle. The SX-180 boom lift
allowed workers to get up and over the
tower legs and reach into the axle to
complete each connection.
According to management at Cianbro,
the level of accuracy and efficiency on
tap from the SX-180 could never have
been achieved with a conventional man
basket.
