EARTHMOVING & EXCAVATION
Australian construction
equipment distributor JCB CEA
is celebrating the 60th birthday
of the JCB backhoe loader.
JCB founder Joseph Cyril
Bamford manufactured the
original JCB backhoe in 1953,
creating for the first time a
single machine with a front
shovel and rear excavator arm.
The concept developed
rapidly, with the launch of the
Hydra-Digger in 1956 and the
heavier, more powerful JCB 4
in 1960. By the 1980s JCB
equipped backhoe loaders with
powershift transmissions, four-
wheel drive, extending dipper
arms, and multi-purpose front buckets,
which brought increased performance and
productivity for operators.
Today, backhoe loaders are the fourth
most popular machine in terms of global
plant equipment sales, despite the
evolution of new and competitive products
over the past 60 years.
The company has developed its

technology and engineering expertise
as well, now building its own range of
diesel engines, its own transmissions
and hydraulic systems. Even the cabs are
designed, assembled and fabricated in-
house. JCB models include the original JCB

Makinex distributes the Italian
manufactured Cormidi Dumper range
in Australia, which comprises 10 models
ranging from 500-2000kg capacity.
Cormidi manages the product end-to-
end in-house, from R&D to production
and assembly. Cormidi has developed
the machine to be fully hydrostatic so
maintenance is as simple as changing the
hydraulic oil, eliminating costly repairs of
cables and belts. The company also said
there is a significant reduction in down
time due to less moving parts within the
unit, as well as more ease-of-use when it
comes to control and operation.
Cormidi Dumpers are rugged, robust
and versatile enabling many things using
one machine: access, lift, shift, load,
move and store. With a rocking roller in
the tracked system, Cormidi Dumpers can
travel over mud, rocks, debris and even
steep terrain allowing access and stability
in those tricky places. Many urban
developments allow only tight access
into gardens and yards, while existing
trees and plants in parklands need to
