After the earthquake destroyed the
shopping district in Christchurch last year,
the community rebuilt its retail centre
entirely out of shipping containers, creating
the Cashel Container Mall.
“Shipping containers have previously
been used to create retail outlets for
independent stores because they are
portable, durable and cost effective, but
this is the first time in New Zealand they
have been used to build an entire shopping
centre,” Rick Mills, Royal Wolf Sales
Manager, South Island New Zealand said.
“Royal Wolf was one of the main
suppliers for this project with over 60
containers provided for the top layer of
the construction. We turned them into
light boxes by cutting out each end of the
container and then painted them in
architectural colours. There are over 30
speciality stores in the mall including cafes,
banks and a food court,” Rick said.
The idea for a shipping container mall
was initiated by the Business and Property
Owners Group, who formed the Re:START
Trust to secure funding to build the project.
“Re:START needed a solution that was
Shopping in shipping containers
Christchurch now has a retail sector made entirely of shipping containers
secure and easy to relocate and shipping
containers were the safest option because
they carry a 10KPA rating to ensure over-
head protection,” Paul Lonsdale Re:START
The Heart Trust Manager and Central City
Manager said. Paul’s office is also located in
a container.
“This project is a positive step looking
toward the future for Christchurch. The
mall is one of the most striking features of
the city’s renewal,” Paul said.

As specialists in portable air conditioners
for hire, Applied Climate Control has
found its PortaTemp indoor cooling units
are ideal for IT applications, including
cooling server rooms if a client’s air
conditioning system breaks down or is
under repair.
The PortaTemp is available in 4.5Kw,
10amp units (and 7.3Kw units) and
features indoor cooling units with outdoor
heat dispersers which do not increase heat
load.
According to Applied Climate Control’s
James Duncan, common portable air
conditioning units feature flexible ducting
which generates heat, generally adding to
the overall heat load in a room. However,
the PortaTemp disperses heat generated
from the unit to an out of room heat
disperser. Condensate water is pumped
into the CRAC room drain and units can be
set to a temperature then left indefinitely.
Applied Climate Control offers a
24/7 service around Australia, with
delivery, installation, commissioning,
decommissioning and pick up.
