“...the so-called

In February I attended the
American rental convention
inOrlando. Thiswas a very
impressive show as usual
and itwas great to see some
Australians recognised for their
service to theARA.
Kennards Hire’s Peter
Lancken receiveda
distinguished service award in
recognitionof his involvement
with the formationand
continuationof theGlobal
Rental Alliance. This award is
thehighest volunteer award
givenout by theARA.
At the international
reception, Kennards Hirewas
also recognised for beinga
member of theARA for 50
years. Itwas aprivilege to
seeAndyKennardaccept this
award; something I think is
extremely rare; that a founding
companymember is still
around50 years on to receive
suchanaward. Congratulations
Andy andKennards Hire!
The annual GRAmeeting
was alsoheld inOrlando;
another excellentmeeting. The
global relationships theHRIA
aremakingaregoing from
strength to strength. This year
wedid apresentationonour
association and I canhonestly
say globally theHRIA is doing
a fantastic job andweare very
well respectedby all other
countries in the alliance.
The leadershipprogram is
on again this yearwith Jim
Clipperton fromNorval Rentals
inCanada comingover to
Australia inApril. Jimhosted
Matt Gordonback in 2010and
I knowhe is looking forward
to another positive exchange.
If youhavea candidate for
theprogram in your team
make theHRIAoffice aware
becausewehave anopening
in September this year for an
Australian exchangemember
tohead toAmerica. The
programopens upnewworlds
of possibilities; in learning,
experience, systems knowledge
andnetworking.
Switching topics completely,
everyone shouldby nowbe
aware the so-called transition
period for the Personal
Property Securities Act has
passedwith the start of the
new year. Thismeansmore
security issues for all those
businesses that didn’t register
equipment on the PPSR -
Personal Property Securities
Register - for hires that have
beenout for over two years.
Theendof the transition
period shouldn’t affect the
majority of ourmembers,
but pleasebeaware if you
dohaveplant out onhire
that has already beenout
formore than two years, get
it registerednow toprotect
your asset. Another forklift
was successfully ‘owned’ by a
liquidator inNSW just recently.
There areoptions toprotect
your assets – just register them
with the PPSR.
TheHRIAhas been
continually trying tomake
someprogresswith the
government to see alterations
to this ridiculously unfair Act.
Webelieve someprogress
is beingmadeandweare
expecting to knowmoreby
March (at timeof going to
press). If nothinghappens
thenwewill be regrouping
and lookingatmoredirect
campaignoptions. However,
wemade somegoodprogress
beforeChristmas and relevant
politicians andbureaucrats are
nowwell awareof thehire
industry’s situation; understand
the inequities of this Act and its
impact on the rental industry.
TheHRIAnational show
comes aroundquickly andwe
are all looking forward to the
threeday show. The interaction
anddiscussions youhavewhile
at the conventionarepriceless.
I encourage all industry
members toattendHIRE14.
Itwill be thebest one yet!
