HIRE AND RENTAL NEWS • MAY 2016
1. What prompted your entry to the
Hire Industry Excellence Awards?
(HIEA)?
We only recently became members of
the HRIA and while we have learnt a lot
from becoming members, we wanted
to benchmark ourselves against other
businesses within the hire industry. We
felt the greatest reward for us would not
be so much about being selected as a
finalist or even possibly winning; it was
more about the process undertaken in
entering and asking ourselves the hard
questions. To be chosen as a finalist was
a massive bonus for us and we are very
grateful for this privilege.
2. How was the entry process?
It was great. Right from the start we
engaged an external party to help us
create a submission and take us through
the process. We still use this submission
and variations of the submission as a
business profile. One of the factors we
had not considered was only one branch
was measured as opposed to our group
business. It also brought home to us,
while we may be recognised globally
for one prime product – ie: the Preston
Superdeck, this did not matter locally
from an awards perspective, so now we
look at ourselves a little differently.
3. What did the entry involve?
Because we wanted to measure our
business as it is, we did absolutely
nothing extra to enhance or improve the
business to gloss up for the awards. We
wanted to measure ourselves against the
business we were at that point, to gain
a true measure and not an artificially
inflated one.
4. How was the judging process?
It was great, the judges were very
understanding and considerate of us
having to keep the business running and
we think it was wise having people that
work in the industry conduct the judging.
5. Did you get any feedback from
the judges?
I had a couple of conversations with the
judges prior and they were quite helpful.
I did request to have a post mortem after
but this has never eventuated which I
think is a shame because we have had to
guess why we didn’t win and what areas
we need to improve on. I personally feel
this is an area for improvement in what is
generally a good process.
6. Was it worthwhile entering?
Absolutely. We have always felt we have
a quality business but we are somewhat
of an enigma having only a small number
of product lines. We have improved a lot
since the judging and in fact we are still
making real business decisions today
geared at improving the business to help
us be a better hire business.
7. What would you say to member
businesses considering entering?
Give it a go and measure yourself against
your peers to see how you can improve.
8. Any tips for future entrants?
Depends on their motivation for entering.
Research past winners; make a stronger
request for catch up with judges post
awards. Spend the money and make it a
worthwhile process beyond the awards.
