Ready to tackle industry challenges into 2016
president's
message
Jeff Bernard, National President
Welcome to the first issue of Hire and
Rental News for 2016 and we hope you
had a relaxing holiday season with family
and friends. With another action packed
year behind us, it’s time to get into
the New Year with a forward-thinking
positive attitude, to take on the upcoming
challenges and opportunities in the year
ahead.
Our AGMs and end of year meetings
for 2015 were all very well attended
and successful and we thank all of our
members for supporting the Association
at their respective meetings.
We have said farewell to a few of our
State Presidents and State Committee
members throughout the Association and
have welcomed new Board Members in
all states. A special thank you to our new
Board members who include:
• Liz Ward of Kennards Hire as the
National Vice President;
• Luke Geelan of Shore Hire as our NSW
State President;
• Steve Le Prou of Kennards Hire as the
QLD State President.
We thank you for stepping into these
roles and we look forward to working
with you to develop fresh ideas and
initiatives for the Association.
We are looking forward to HIRE16
‘Connecting People’ which will take
place 5–6 May 2016 at the Gold Coast
Convention and Exhibition Centre.
Visit the HRIA website for the link to
the HIRE16 website or go direct to the
Convention website
(hireconvention.com.
au) to find all the information you need for
this year’s Convention.
Planning, exhibitor and delegate bookings
are well underway and I encourage all
members to get online and book today.
Our annual industry Convention is a great
opportunity for networking and having a
look at the latest equipment and services
for our industry. The industry seminars
and keynote speakers also provide unique
insights into business management and
industry issues.
I hope you enjoy this issue of Hire and
Rental News and I extend my best wishes
to you and your families, hoping this will
be a year of good health and successful

PPSA Update –
lobbying required
Although a change on 1 October
2015 saw a 90 day threshold for serial
number registrable goods extend to
one year, the HRIA warns the problem
of indefinite hire still exists. The HRIA
advises when using the HRIA Master
Agreements be sure to enter a definitive
start and end date for hires less than
one year in duration to better protect
assets.
“If in doubt whether the hire is
caught out by the Act as ‘indefinite,’ a
registration on the PPSR with sound
legal advice would assist in protecting
the hire equipment,” HRIA CEO, James
Oxenham said.
”All of this burdensome red tape which
the industry previously did not have to
concern itself with is the reason we are
fighting for change.
“The Attorney General’s office has
looked at the effect the PPSA is having
on the hire industry and we hope they
will respond. The joint HRIA/EWPA
Commission has worked with legal
advisor Oliver Shtein of Bartier Perry
to explain the problems faced by hire
companies, but more importantly
propose workable solutions. We will
keep the pressure up and push for these
solutions to be implemented. Please
highlight the issues we are all facing
with your local MPs,” James said.
