EVENTS in FOCUS
In our Association we trust –
feedback welcomed
president's
message
I trust you all enjoyed a safe, happy
festive season and are now looking
forward to a big year ahead.
In a short while we will all be able
to catch up on the Gold Coast
at the HRIA Convention. This is
looking like another great year and
our last opportunity to enjoy this venue for a few years due to
Commonwealth Games in 2018. Make sure you book early for the
event night this year because last year was a sell-out! We don’t
want you to miss out this year; we have a new format, funky
venue, but still great fun and lots of networking opportunity.
Thanks to all who responded and took up the offer of the four
page guide to the Temporary Structures Standard. This is still
available to all members so let me know if you would like a copy.
I would welcome your feedback on how the Standard is being
interpreted or utilised in your state, or local area. In Victoria
there is still a way to go, with a wide variety of interpretation by
Municipal Building Surveyors. Our intention is to work closely
with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA) to provide further
education and clarification.
It is very clear the path to obtaining a permit or compliance
in respect to temporary structures is very varied from state to
state and even from municipality to municipality. We will put
together a session on this for the Convention in May, with the aim
of providing a clear understanding of what is required in each
location as well as an overview of the different permit processes
members are dealing with. The updated Weighting Guide will
also provide a valuable tool for members. This new guide is in
line with the provisions of the Temporary Structures Standard. As
always any feedback on the guide would be warmly welcomed;
shared experience is our best form of learning.
The full details of our Temporary Structures Erectors’ course
will be available shortly. As you can appreciate there are a lot of
stakeholders to be considered if we are to make this a worthwhile
course. The VBA has also been reviewing its requirements for
licencing with respect to temporary structures and we do need
to know the results of that review before we can finalise all of the
parameters of our intended course.
The Queensland government extended a further invitation
for industry groups to engage in opportunities regarding the
upcoming Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.
The meeting provided opportunity to:
• Learn more about the sponsorship and procurement
opportunities around GC2018 work packages;
• Learn more about timing of key procurement activities;
• Identify and discuss business development opportunities;
• Identify possible innovation and partnership opportunities.
In addition, industry associations were able to provide insights in
relation to their particular sector which may inform procurement
strategies. If you have any concerns, problems or would like to
share your thoughts please contact me at any time.
