“We’ve grown in leaps and bounds and
haven’t been afraid to be innovative. I can
see the business has a long road ahead of it.
“For the future, I see myself here, in hire.
There are still plenty of challenges in this
role and it is an exceptionally good role.
The next step for me is to gain some formal
qualifications.
“Kennards really believes in its people
and is keen to support its staff in many
ways, education and training just one of
them. They have supported me all the way
through my career in hire.
“Education wise, I have my Business and
Real Estate certificate and over the years,
Kennards has put me through several
courses including time management,
customer service, supervision, leadership
and business management courses.
“I’ve also undertaken the 12 week
intensive Platinum Leadership course; a
Kennards’ Hire initiative conducted in six,
two-day sessions, over some months.
“That is an instructive course involving
360 degrees of personal perceptions of how
others view you and vice versa.
“For the 12 months up to the end of
2011, I have been undertaking an MBA
through the University of Western Sydney
part time.
“The course is sponsored by Kennards
and will take four years to complete. Or
maybe a little longer, since I recently put
my studies on hold following the birth
of my fourth child. My wife and I now
have four boys aged 10, 4, 2 and
10 months.
“I will resume my studies soon, but
felt I needed to devote a little more time
to my family in the short term. Flexibility
is key to my role at Kennards.
“There are a lot of people who have
come through the ranks at Kennards.
Kennards is a big believer in promoting
from within the ranks. They believe in
people and it is testament to the family
business philosophy we have so many
good people.
“The business of hire revolves around
people, product and customer service.
“To get into hire, you really have to
learn the processes and the equipment
and then understand the products so
you can offer better targeted customer
service.
“My advice to younger people looking
to work their way into a career in hire
is this: focus on baby steps. Rather than
trying to make one big leap into
management, focus on where
you can make a difference where you’re
at now. Look at what you want to achieve
and break it down into manageable steps.
Smaller steps are easier to achieve.”
