NSW & QLD TRANSPORT
OF HIGH RISK PLANT AND
LICENCES
Under the new harmonisation WH&S
Act it states truck drivers of equipment
(in reality the truck driver loads and
unloads) need a high risk licence to load
and unload access equipment (boom
lift etc.) Where the new harmonised
WH&S Act has been adopted (NSW &
QLD), truck drivers must have a Fork
Lift or Boom Lift High Risk Licence, but
mechanics and service engineers can
still drive them under an exemption.
Victoria has released an impact
statement and report to explain its
concerns over harmonisation. Safework
Australia has released five new model
Codes of Practice for public comment.

PRECAST CONCRETE
BRACING SAFETY TIPS
The February edition of the National
Precast Association of Australia
newsletter featured safety information
on temporary bracing (propping) of
precast concrete panels for erection
design engineers (EDEs) responsible
for the safe design of precast bracing
systems. Six things crucial for the safe
lifting and erection were identified:
• an EDE undertakes the ‘erection
design’
• all chosen lifting systems are
engineered and approved by the EDE
• lifting systems are correctly installed
by a reputable precaster with
documented quality assurance
• all rigging diagrams are included
in the erection design and
communicated to the erection crew
• all rigging practices are in
accordance with the erection design
and appropriate Australian Standards
• changes are approved by the EDE.

New name matches mining business boom
Daiman Clarke with one of the fleet of trucks at
McLarens Fleetspec Hire
McLarens Hire & Drive, as
it was known for 21 years,
began as a small family business
specialising in the transport of
school students, sports clubs and
bucks and hens on their nights
of celebrations.
Two decades on, it has a
fleet of over 100 trucks and
buses. As the state’s mining and
construction industries have
boomed, so too has McLarens,
and in the same direction.
The entire McLarens Fleetspec
Hire range meets the strict
specifications of the mining and
construction industries. Each
vehicle meets stringent safety
standards.
All vehicles are serviced and
maintained by an in-house
team, led by owner Daiman
Clarke, a mechanic by trade.
McLarens Fleetspec works
on major projects such
as Midwest Rail Project,
Karawa, Ravensthorpe Nickel
Operations, Boddington Gold
Mine expansion, and Mt Keith
mining operations.
“We lost my father, who
started this business, to cancer
in 2000, and changing the
name of the company he
loved so much was not easy,”
said Daiman. “But with our
expansion in the mining and
construction industries growing
at a rapid rate, it was fitting
our business name reflects our
vision for the future.”
