“I know personally I
gain immeasurable
benefit from our
annual industry
Convention; the
networking and
sharing we are lucky
enough to find
among our peers. We
are fortunate to be in
such an industry and
our annual
Convention is always
a great place to talk
over issues and find
resolutions.”
Tax time has come and gone
again for another year, and
as we all settle into a new
financial year our thoughts turn
to reflection on our businesses,
what we did last year, and ways
we can work smarter or more
effectively in the future. In
recent months we’ve challenged
the ways we think about
business and the hire industry in
general in three ways.
Firstly, I know personally I
gain immeasurable benefit from
our annual industry Convention;
the networking and sharing we
are lucky enough to find among
our peers. We are fortunate to
be in such an industry and our
annual Convention is always a
great place to talk over issues
and find resolutions.
For everyone who attended
this year I know you all gained
as much from it as I did but
of course it wouldn’t happen
without our industry’s support,
so thanks for the effort, to
hire members, and to all the
suppliers who turned out in
force to give us a well-rounded
look at equipment options.
Second, recently, I hosted
the Global Rental Alliance’s
International Rental Business
Leadership Program participant.
Camden Hire played host
to Angie Venekamp from
Squamish BC (from Canada)
who stayed and worked in
our business, attended the
HRIA Convention and visited
other hire businesses. It was
our aim to give Angie the best
representation of the Australian
hire industry we could and
hopefully we managed that;
certainly Angie said it was a
successful exchange and she
left with many new ideas, new
friends and fond memories.
The International Rental
Business Leadership Program
is a partnership between
the member associations of
the Global Rental Alliance
to advance leadership
opportunities and increase
worldwide awareness of the
equipment rental industry. I
would encourage anyone who
might be interested in hosting a
leadership exchange participant
to do it! You will get so much
from the experience and more
than likely make life-long
friends. I know we learned more
about Canadian rental models
than I ever expected.
Third, I have been involved
for the past 20 years with a
school (local to Camden) that
educates children with a mild
to moderate disability and
through my connections with
the school, have employed two
staff members with disabilities.
These staff members give me
and our business more than
I feel we will ever be able to
give them and I would like to
encourage you, when you next
have a yards-man or off sider
position available, to consider
a person with a disability. For
us, it has created unbelievable
moral and rapport between
both staff and customers alike.
While we’re discussing
rapport, our industry is focused
on presenting a united front on
the issue of the PPSA. The HRIA
is still working and lobbying to
get amendments made to the
recently enacted legislation. A
lot of our industry’s progress is
due to the dedication and hard
work of a few focused members
working in tandem with our
national office. I would like to
acknowledge the hard work
of Tim Nuttall who has been
working tirelessly on the issue.
Finally, it is with great sadness
we acknowledge the passing of
Neville Kennard – an industry
great who was instrumental
in the early days of Kennards
Hire and the hire industry as a
whole. He will be greatly missed
and our thoughts go to the
Kennard family.
