HIRE AND RENTAL NEWS • NOVEMBER 2016

INDUSTRY in FOCUS

The majority of plant and equipment in

the Australian marketplace is common

keyed and from all reports, relatively easy

to rebirth with a simple spray paint.

Being a high-risk asset, insurance

premiums and excess continues to

rise. One of the key statistics affecting

premiums for skid steers and excavators,

two of the most stolen pieces of plant,

is the low recovery rate once the plant

is stolen. Loss of equipment affects

the bottom line of a hire company

substantially. This occurs through

downtime, waiting for new equipment to

arrive, and loss of hires.

Taking a holistic approach to storage of

equipment and CCTV is great in avoiding

plant being stolen but when it comes to

getting the equipment back the only real

way to determine its location is through

GPS Tracking and Telematics.

The growth of GPS Telematics in other

Mitigating risk of theft and impact on business

By David Nealon, Pinpoint Communications

Theft of plant and equipment sadly is a continuing trend within the hire industry.

industries has pushed the price point

so low to be an attractive business

proposition.

GPS tracking for plant and equipment can

now be supplied and fitted for less than

$395 with ongoing operating costs from

$180 per annum. When bundled with the

purchase and finance of new equipment

the cost of GPS telematics can be spread

over the life of the plant.

GPS devices now have highly sensitive

GPS receivers that enable you to install

devices in hard to find places in your

plant without degrading the GPS signal

strength. Built in long-life batteries will

keep the device tracking for up to a

month. This is important because thieves

will try to bypass security systems by

disconnecting main power.

Geofences are a virtual zone around the

area you store your plant and equipment.

This will trigger email and SMS alerts if

the equipment is operated or towed out

of the area. Setting up operating hours

of the vehicle can allow you to receive

alerts if plant is turned on or moved in the

middle of the night.

Alerts can be sent anywhere, often to

managers of the hire company but they

can also be sent directly to 24hr security

companies for call out response.

Even the simplest of trackers are now

able to plug into the ignition to give a

rolling weekly report of exactly when

and for how long each day the plant

was used. Gone are the days of a ‘No we

didn’t use it on Sunday because it was

raining!’ That argument is quickly verified

showing a customer a report they did in

fact use it on Sunday and are now able to

capture that rain-day revenue having the

tracker help pay for itself.
