HIRE AND RENTAL NEWS • AUGUST 2016

Managing Director,

GrahamArundell issued

a statement a week after

the decision.

“Following the clear

decision to leave the

European Union, HAE

EHA, together with other

business organisations,

will want clarity as to

the timetable for UK

withdrawal. Tackling

market uncertainty and particularly

releasing paused investment for

infrastructure, utilities and house

building must be priorities. We want

the UK government and devolved

administrations to work together to plan

for an orderly and phased departure

and for the implications for existing and

HAE EHA calls for clarity following Brexit

In light of the recent British referendum on Britain’s

future within the European Union and the historic vote to

leave, the Hire Association Europe (HAE) and Event Hire

Association (EHA) have announced a new beginning for

the hire industry starts here and now.

new business transactions

to be better understood

and explained, including

access to the skilled

workforce we all need now

and in the future.”

According to the official

statement from the HAE,

during the Brexit process

the association (HAE)

will continue to lobby

parliament to ensure

the formation of future legislation and

the interests of the members are kept

in the forefront of future policy. The

association is committed to achieving

stability and maximising business results

from decisions and ensuring industry

standards are adhered to.

this stage, and hopefully it is, but when

people get desperate and disillusioned

it is frightening how thin the veneer of

decency is. The UK has already seen a

tenfold increase in abuse and thuggery

against immigrants and coloured UK

nationals. With openly hostile and nasty

attitudes that frankly shock, all this

within weeks of the referendum. I also

used to do business in Yugoslavia where

Croatians, Bosnians and Serbians all

seemed to be the best of friends laughing

and joking together after work. And

then as the country split back into its

constituent parts and Slobodan Milosevic

whipped up nationalism in Serbia to

gain power, the whole place went mad

with neighbours fighting and ethnic

cleansing. I still struggle to believe it

actually happened – such civilised people

living peacefully and tolerantly together

one minute and then slaughtering each

other and committing atrocities the

next! So while I don’t think that would

happen in Europe in 2017 – I do know a

simple chain of events can lead to this

quite quickly. Don’t forget Hitler kicked

off his campaign of domination with a

referendum on the withdrawal from the

League of Nations.
