Australian-based plant hire and
engineering company, Jonker Hire, has
designed and patented a range of stadium
lighting towers that emit between 24,000
and 40,000 watts, and can replace up to
five traditional lighting plants.
Managing Director John Jonker said:
“
Not only are they the most powerful
lights available, they have other features
never before been applied to lighting
towers. The boom of each machine is
either 18m or 24m long, fully hydraulic and
can slew 360 degrees. This is operated by
wireless remote control, reducing the level
of contact needed to operate the lights,
and thus Lost Time Injuries.
“
We aimed, and succeeded, in creating
a light that would illuminate large areas,
minimise shadows and above all, reduce
costs and improve safety,” John said.
“
After the initial 4WD model was
created, several different base options
were designed to suit all terrain. These
include a track-base option for boggy
conditions; a skid-base option for mine
sites; and a self-drive option for even faster
relocation of the towers.”

The prototype was developed after an
encounter with a Bowen Basin Open Cut
Examiner who was frustrated lighting
didn’t light up high walls effectively.
“
Since Jonker Plant Hire had expanded
into engineering in 2007, this provided the
capability to develop the stadium lighting
towers based on customer feedback.
“
It was a natural progression for us
to incorporate engineering services into
our repertoire. Not only were we able
to fulfil our own needs, we could also
undertake jobs based on what people in
the industry were talking about, what they
felt was missing and what they needed.
Jonker Engineering now provides a range
of services including welding, hydraulic
repairs, manufacturing of compaction
wheels, stick rakes and tree spears,
steps, handrails, painting, sandblasting,
refurbishments and conversions.
