INDUSTRY NEWS
by Phil Farmer - Bayside Hire
It is with extreme regret we report the sudden and unexpected
passing of a long standing member of our Victorian hire community
on Saturday, 18 May 2013.
Any person who ever had the pleasure of meeting, or even luckier,
working with Phil Rattan, will know his nick name of ‘RAT’, could not
have been further from the adjectives that should have been used to
describe his very friendly, chirpy and outgoing character.
Rat adored his wife Chris and was extremely proud of two sons
Darren and Justin who should know their father was not only well
liked, but highly respected within the industry he worked in for
so many years. His desire to chat to nearly every single customer
who entered his workplace with one of his standard lines such as:
What’s the weather going to do?” or “knocked off for the day
already?” would often have his fellow workmates in fits of laughter.
Our deepest sympathies go to Chris, Darren, Justin and their
extended family and friends. He will be remembered fondly for
a long, long time, by not only his work mates, but also so many
customers who grew to admire him.
Phil Rattan started his career with the Board of Works as a motor
mechanic, working on projects such as the Thompson Dam but
quickly found himself a job with his first hire company in 1986 in DIY
Hire. Phil stayed with DIY Hire in Forrest Hills until it was taken over
by Wreckair Hire and closed down which meant he was relocated
to the Wreckair Clayton depot for about five years before another
relocation to the Dandenong depot.
After approximately 10 years with Wreckair, Phil was poached
for his impressive skills to the local ‘Dandy Hire’ in Dandenong and
continued there for approximately five years until that business
was sold. When I heard Dandy Hire was to be closed, I eagerly
approached Phil and invited him to join us at Bayside Hire where he
became an integral part of our business for the next 10 years.
Cheers to you Rat from Phil, Lyn and Chris Farmer, and all the staff
of Bayside Hire.

Atlas Copco has geared up with new distributors for its range of
hydraulic breakers and silent demolition tools in New South Wales,
Queensland & Western Australia.
Earlier this year Atlas Copco appointed Australian Hammer
Supplies as its sole dealer for New South Wales. AHS has been
supplying attachments to New South Wales customers for over
20
years and Bruce Pannells and his team are well known in the
industry for their ability to support the equipment they sell.
In a further announcement following a mutual agreement, BA
Equipment Group (BAEG) has started distribution of Atlas Copco
breakers in Queensland and Western Australia.
BA Equipment Group (BAEG) is a very familiar name to those
in our industry who have regular requirements for rock breaking
equipment,” Glenn Illingworth, Business Line Manager Construction
Tools at Atlas Copco said.
The aim of the new agreements is to further enhance the ability
to service the needs of contractors engaged on the front line of the
industry. The specialist expertise and hands-on approach of the new
dealers are the perfect complement to the quality of Atlas Copco
products.”
