Container needed or funds for medical trip to Solomon Islands 2020
For anyone looking to support a great cause, UpHire’s Mike Spence’s wife is part of a team of medical specialists from Nepean Public Hospital Operating Suite planning a trip to the Solomon Islands. The trip will run from 15- 26 June 2020 to provide much needed surgical care to babies, children, adults and the elderly.
The team is fundraising to raise $5k to purchase a new container to transport the medical supplies and leave in the Solomons as a storage facility.
Participating as part of non-profit organisation, DAISI (Doctors assisting in Solomon Islands), each member of the team pays for their own flights and accommodation. They also take a lot of their own medical supplies and equipment.
Lauren Spence said the first week of the two week trip will be in Gizo Hospital. They will provide surgical care to all those who have limited resources and access to health care.
“The surgery we will be undertaking includes head and neck surgery, general surgery such as hernias and minor plastic surgery such as removal of skin lesions.,” Lauren said.
“The second week we are spending our time at Vella Lavella at a high school. The school does not have access to fresh running water. We are installing water pumps to pump fresh water up into the high school. “
Clothes, toys and more
“As well as providing medical care to people in need, we are also collecting clothing and toys to donate to the hospital we will be working at. The water pumps and piping have already been generously donated.
“What we require now is a brand new 20 foot shipping container to transport all of our equipment and donated supplies to the Solomon Islands. Once we unload all of our supplies, the shipping container will be used for storage at the high school. Due to the extreme seasons the Solomon Islands experiences, having a sealed/water tight storage facility will be a massive help for the school.
