66 HIRE AND RENTAL NEWS • NOVEMBER 2018 POWER & PUMPS New ideas and consistent quality to service wins award New ideas and services and consistent high quality approach to customer service, safety and presentation has seen Kennards Hire recognised as Aussie Pumps ‘Hire Company of the Year’ for the second year in a row. Aussie Pumps said the award goes to its major supplier in the rental industry and recognises hire companies for innovation, presentation and overall professionalism. “We’ve seen Kennards make major advances in the last financial year, not only with the opening of new branches but in stimulating the market for rental opportunities,”Aussie Pumps’ Hamish Lorenz said. “With the big box stores continuing to have an impact on rental activity, innovative hire opportunities have to be developed to provide differentiation between a rental product and a hardware level cheapie,” he said. Kennards were the first major hire company to enter the drain cleaner jetter business. “Safety was a big issue for us and we wanted to make sure the Aussie machines complied with all the standards and did not require operator certification,” Kennards Hire’s Andy Kennard said. Kennards Hire now operates over 150 hire depots around Australia. “The hire and rental industry in Australia owes a lot of its first class image to the Kennards organisation’s ability to make renting more attractive than acquisition,” Aussie Pumps Chief Engineer, John Hales said. Visit: www.aussiepumps.com.au Tough as nails pumps designed for industry takes hard knocks Advice from a major hire company led Aussie Pumps to the design of its Aussie Scud pressure cleaners which are safer, use less water and are built like a cross between a Ferrari and a Bobcat, Aussie Pump’s Chief Engineer, John Hales said. “Andy Kennard taught us European designed high pressure water blasters couldn’t stand up to the rigors of Australia’s rental market. We learnt top quality components, heavy duty construction and simplicity of design are what works,” John said. “The most popular machine is the 13 litres 4,000psi unit using a ‘Big Berty’ slow speed triplex pump as the heart of the system. We use gearbox drives from either a Honda petrol engine or Yanmar 10hp diesel. Frames are hot dipped galvanised but we are moving to stainless steel frames for longer life and consumer appeal,” John said. Smaller Scuds like the AB30 (nicknamed “The Pocket Rocket”) are also big hits in the hire industry in Australia” he said. “The ‘Pocket Rocket’ is a 3,000psi pressure cleaner, using a ‘Big Berty’ Bertolini pump again, with a 6.5hp Honda GX200 engine in a compact Scud style ergonomic trolley frame for 10” flat free tyred wheels,” John said. “In Australia nobody will pick up a trash pump on a site and carry it. Site OH&S rules are stringently enforced. If a pump needs to be moved an excavator will pick it up by the frame, take it to where it needs to go and drop it not too gently into the new location. “The result is conventional trash pumps with light duty steel frames wind up looking like train wrecks. “We developed the ‘Site Boss’ and ‘Mine Boss’ trash pump range to satisfy requirement for machines suitable for those demanding applications. That product range extends from 2” all the way through to big 6” trash pumps capable of moving up to 6,000lpm. The ‘big fellas’ are normally skid or trailer mounted,” John said. “The 2”, 3” and 4” pump all offer front opening ports to enable the pump to be cleared out without breaking pipework or dismantling hoses. The pumps come with heavy duty high SG non-clog style open impellers and silicone carbide mechanical seals. The advantage is the big front port that opens up the pump in seconds. “That means in the event of a ‘choke’ the pump can be cleaned out quickly, without special tools, and without disconnecting hoses or pipework. “The 2” to 4” pumps all come with super heavy duty 38mm galvanised steel frames with integrated lifting bar. Fire extinguisher and battery isolation with e-stop are all standard equipment on the ‘mine-spec’ version. Trolley mounted configurations for the 4” pump are optional. “When it comes to dust suppression we work with major manufacturers of mobile tankers and supply pump especially configured for the rental industry,” he said. “The Australian experience can be summarised as some of the toughest operating conditions mixed in with ‘none- too careful’ handling on site.” Visit: www.aussiepumps.com.au Aussie Pumps presents Andy Kennard with the Hire Company of the Year Award.
