Hire and Rental News - May 2018

Kennards Hire has signed a new deal as Official Partners with the West Coast Eagles in 2018 and has been key in providing equipment to help construct the 60,000 seat Optus Stadium, home of the Eagles and their new training ground at Lathlain Park Stadium WA. Trevor Nisbett, CEO of the West Coast Eagles, believes this collaboration is a natural fit for the two Australian brands. “Kennards Hire has been important to us on the ground for the development of the club’s new training base and administration facility at Lathlain Park. They have also played a significant role in the building of our Optus Stadium, so we are delighted to have them commit as an official partner too. “The Lathlain Park base should be one of the best sporting facilities in the southern hemisphere, and with Kennards Hire’s help, it is on track for us to relocate in about 12 months’ time.” The Kennards Hire and West Coast Eagles Last year 6.7 million taxpayers claimed a record $7.9 billion in deductions for ‘other work-related expenses’ according to Assistant Commissioner Kath Anderson but this year taxpayers are warned to keep appropriate records. Legitimate ‘other work related expenses’ can include home office, union fees, mobile phone and internet, overtime meals and tools and equipment. “However, they are only deductible if they meet the three golden rules. First, you must have paid for it and not been reimbursed, second, it must be directly related to earning your income and not a private expense, and third, you must have a record to prove it.” “Substantiation will be a key focus area for the ATO this year,” Ms Anderson said. “It’s important you have a record of the expense and can demonstrate how you calculated your claims. ‘Over claiming’ on tax returns reached record peaks in 2017 and the ATO is now warning taxpayers they will be paying close attention to claims for ‘other’ work-related expenses this year. INDUSTRY NEWS 8 HIRE AND RENTAL NEWS • MAY 2018 Australians on notice to keep their receipts for tax time Ms Anderson warned the ATO has sophisticated systems and analytics to ensure wrongdoing is caught. “If a claim raises a red flag in the system, we will investigate further. We have a range of strategies to make sure people pay the correct amount of tax, ranging from help and education through to audits and even prosecution for more serious cases.” Visit: www.ato.gov.au Point of Rental CEOWayne Harris said the result is innovative software and excellent customer service can be found at new addresses in the UK and Australia.
