ISSN 1838-1197 32 ACCESS IN ACTION • MAY 2018 We are progressing with some exciting initiatives and we also have been representing our members amid some changing ideas from ‘Tier One’ construction companies. INITIATIVES: MEWP Supervisor Course The exciting initiatives include the introduction of the MEWP Supervisor course. This course will benefit site supervisors and will show them what to be aware of on a work site; what equipment will get the job done efficiently; and what training operators of MEWPs need to have, to safely and compliantly operate a machine on a work site. Some of the content covered includes; Legislation and design standards; Selection – machine types, design features and limitations; Accident causation; Emergency descent controls – rescue planning and Modifications and attachments. Advanced Boom Course We also have the newAdvanced Boom Course which will cover more complex MEWPs. Key features of this course include; Operational Envelope; Expanding Axles; Lifting Sequence; Super Boom Selection and Operational Tasks. Both courses can be delivered by EWPA Senior Accredited Trainers whose details are listed on our website. Accounting and Advisory service We have partnered with HLB Mann Judd to provide this new membership benefit to be released at HIRE18. See the story on p20. Representing the Members We are representing our members in discussion with CPB Contractors who is looking for a way to increase safety on its sites. One of the company’s ideas is to slow down scissor lift drive and lift speeds to give operators more time to react. The EWPA has spent many hours discussing the benefits, detriments and possible shortfalls of implementing this change and in consultation with suppliers, rental members and CPB. Following a second meeting with the EWPA, at the time this report went to print, CPB has put a hold on demanding slower than regular speeds, as it continues discussions Changing access industry ideas one at a time with the EWPA and assesses feedback from industry stakeholders and its own representatives. Global update The EWPA is represented globally through its participation in International Standards such as the technical committee 214. It is important the Australian access industry has a voice at the table when global decisions are made. I’d like to thank our EWPA Technical Directors for Engineering, Peter Wenn and Operations, Peter Davis for participating in these meetings. The EWPA looks forward to hosting its first Global Access Exchange participant in May 2018. We welcome the successful representative from Horizon Platforms in the UK to Australia, who you will see working with the HIRE18 staff at this year’s Convention before going on to spend two weeks with an EWPA access member company. EWPA members will be contacted for expressions of interest in sending a staff member over to the UK later in the year as we build on this relationship between the Southern and Northern hemisphere access industries. Best Practice Guide We will be producing a Best Practice Guide for the access industry and this will be a joint effort working with stakeholders such as the regulators, rental companies, trainers, OEMs, engineers and others to produce a one-stop guide for the safe operation of MEWPs to be launched in 2019. HIRE 18 The HRIA Convention is one of the highlights of the EWPA year and with the generous support of our sponsors, exhibitors and members, I look forward to a successful celebration of 50 years of HRIA Conventions. As well as the largest exhibition in several years, there are breakout sessions, networking events and keynote speakers including John Garrison: Chairman – Terex Corporation, Peter Schrader: MD & COO – Zeppelin Rental and Dylan Alcott – Paralympian. See you at HIRE18, 30-31 May at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Regards Doug Rawlings My first six months in the EWPA President's chair have been an eye opener. The Board and staff have had plenty to do and are working hard to improve several facets of the industry. Doug Rawlings
