Hire and Rental News - August 2018
17 HIRE AND RENTAL NEWS • AUGUST 2018 Continued on p18... Post Graduate Degree in Editing and Publishing. I worked for a couple of companies in Pharmaceutical Marketing before becoming the Editor of a Trade Magazine in the IT industry. While working as an editor I had two kids and then went on to manage a hotel/pub which I owned with my partner. Q: Did you undertake specialist training/or gain qualifications? I started at Aim Hire as part of the Operations team but soon became Marketing Manager, which was a logical move given my past experience in marketing. In 2014 I was asked to join the Board of Directors. I have some really great mentors on our Board including part owners Jack and David Bowen from Bowens Timber and Hardware. I’ve undertaken a Leadership Management Course called the Performance Edge and recently I completed a course on Financial Acumen for Directors. Next I intend to do the Company Directors Course through the AICD (Australian Institute of Company Directors). Q: What are the challenges for women in the hire industry? Portable toilet hire is not traditionally on the list of career aspiration for most young women and I can’t say I ever imagined I’d be in the loo hire game if you asked me when I was studying Economics at University. But as it turns out it’s a great industry to be involved in, we have a lot of challenges but a lot of laughs too. When I took on the role of Managing Director at Aim Hire, I certainly had some huge boots to fill – and I have no doubt there were those who doubted a female could run a traditionally male oriented business. I think knowing this made me even more determined to prove myself and to prove to myself I could manage the role well. At first, when I came up with an obstacle at work I’d simply ask myself: “OK Elise, what would Ray have done?”. These days, however, I’m more confident in my own decision making skills and I’m lucky to have a strong management team supporting my goals. Since taking on the role of Managing Director I’m pleased to confirm we have delivered sustained growth in both sales and profits month on month for the past two years. In terms of challenges, I think we all face challenges in business and its about meeting them head on and proving that whether you are male or female you can look at it logically, analyse the situation and act on it. Actually, I think women are really good at this. We tend to think and evaluate the situation before we act rather than charging forward with an 'I’m the Chief' attitude. Q: Are these issues being addressed? I think its really important to network within the industry. For many in hire WOMEN in HIRE "...we all face challenges in business and its about meeting them head on and proving ...you can look at it logically, analyse the situation and act on it...."
