ACCESS in ACTION 34 ACCESS IN ACTION • NOVEMBER 2017 Balco Lifestyle has created a device which will detect if a ladder becomes unstable when in use. Step Smart alerts the user to danger with red lights and an alarm. Kathryn Trivella from Balco Lifestyle said according to the Injury Journal, 3.3% of all trauma presentations to emergency departments in Victoria are for ladder fall injuries. “On average three Victorians will die every year from injuries sustained in the fall; primarily those who die will be men aged over 55 who are doing odd jobs around the home. With Step Smart, this figure will hopefully be reduced by encouraging more cautious ladder use,” Kathryn said. “Step Smart helps in setting up a ladder to a level position before using it. When the ladder is set and stable, Step Smart will flash green and the user is free to use the ladder. Should the angle of the ladder change from its original set position at any point, Step Smart will flash red and emit an alarm. The user then is aware the ladder is at an unsafe level and they should proceed with caution or an accident could occur. "Step Smart is a good fit to most ladders when set up, it is attached to the ladder between rungs where it sits safety and securely courtesy of a telescopic pole and bracket, which locks into place. "Like a spirit level, Step Smart indicates whether the ladder is level and safe to use (green light) and not yet level (red light)." When the ladder is level, the user sets Step Smart to Alarm Mode before using the ladder. Any change in the ladder’s angle, however slight, will cause an alarm to sound and the LED lights to flash. A red flashing light and slow beep indicate the ladder is at a dangerous angle. Solid red lights and a rapid beep mean the ladder is extremely dangerous and is likely to tip over. Step Smart has 70 hours of battery life. In 1986, Manitou created Manitou Costruzioni Industriali in Bologna. In 1993, the MRT1540 (15m/4 tonnes), Manitou’s first rotating telescopic, was created on Manitou premises in Italy. In 2007, Manitou said the MRT 2150 became the world’s bestselling roto telehandler. MRT Privilege + machines are all-terrain telehandlers with four-wheel drive and steering and full 360° turret rotation. MRTs are adapted to operate quickly and efficiently, maintaining impressive load capacities without the need to move the machine, the company said. The MRT concept can be used on tires or stabilisers and combines the functions of three machines in one: telehandler mode; crane mode; platform mode. In June 2017, Manitou Group launched two new rotative telehandlers: the MRT 2470 (the first solution to offer a 7 tonnes load capacity at more than 20m height) and the MRT 3050. The MRT 3050 Privilege Plus is a rotating telehandler designed to handle heavy loads. It can place and remove loads at 360° at heights of up to 30m from a single, stationary point. The five-point boom works with the hydrostatic transmission so the operator has precision when steering the boom. The MRT 3050 has a lifting capacity of 5 tonnes and a lifting height 29.50m. It provides an easier maintenance access and stabilisers with a deployment length of up to 6.25m. Stabilisers are fitted with a strain gauge system to ensure more accurate and secure detection of the pressure of the stabilisers on the ground. The user can also check deployment via the 7 inch TFT screen dashboard. Equipped with a two-ratio hydrostatic transmission, the MRT 3050 has a maximum speed of 40km/h. It has a Mercedes 176 hp Final Tier IV engine. The MRT 2470 Privilege Plus is a three- in-one unit which combines the functions of a telehandler, crane and work platform and comes with 360° turret rotation. Two new rotative telehandlers in Oceania Manitou made its debut in rotating telehandlers in 1982, after entering into a distribution agreement with Italy- based manufacturer Fargh. Capable of lifting 7 tonnes or 2.5 tonnes at 23.7m while maintaining accurate control of the load, the MRT 2470 is the first solution to offer a 7 tonnes load capacity at more than 20m height. The new MRT 2470 has a new chassis with a newly-designed counterweight for maximum stability with the load at 24m. The pentagonal cross-section allows for precision when operating the boom, preserving lateral rigidity regardless of the amount of wear, which translates into greater safety for the operator. With its hydrostatic shift-on-fly transmission option, the model allows the operator to choose between a manual or automatic gearbox. With two ratios, maximum speed is 40 km/h. Cab access is provided with a wider footboard aligned with the cabin. Optionally, there is an electronic stairway with an extra step that slides out when the stabilisers are deployed, making it easier to get in and out of the cab. This means the machine can be raised 23cm when the stabilisers are deployed. A dual-energy engine with an electrical system is also available as an option to reduce noise and engine emissions.
