EVENTS IN FOCUS
2012
was again a year of challenges and
opportunities; the standard of product and
presentation seen at events throughout
Australia last year was outstanding.
I look forward to seeing what can be
achieved in the coming years by members
with imagination, innovation and drive.
Following Geoff Tucker stepping down
as Events President, Geoff wanted to make
sure the contribution by Brett O’Hara,
formerly with Harry the Hirer, was also
acknowledged. Geoff thanked Brett at the
Victorian AGM last year for the time and
effort he put into our industry, together
with advice and support; so thanks Brett!
Luckily we are not losing Geoff’s
involvement in the industry, Geoff will assist
with judging duties for the Hire Industry
Excellence Awards.
Why Excellence Awards? Because that is
exactly what they are; an award by your
peers that recognises your commitment to
your business to strive for excellence. If you
have not nominated your business please
ask yourself “why not?”
EVENTS – PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Focusing on a positive 2013
Consider nominating your company;
there are no horror stories from this
process. Every nominee to date has flagged
the review as a worthwhile experience, so if
not now, when?
Challenges: Plenty, including the PPSA,
and the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA).
The HRIA has worked very hard supplying
information regarding the PPSA. This
legislation creates a lot of extra stress and
management for our industry, so keep
abreast of information and keep your guard
up. Don’t let somebody else’s problems
become yours; liquidators will enforce the
law without mercy.
A copy of the DDA is available on the
HRIA web site. Take some time to review it,
because it is legislation we have no option
but to comply with or risk court action.
In a nutshell, the act really makes no
distinction between a permanent building
and a temporary structure. In a lot of cases
compliance is impossible, so it leaves a
checking engineer with a lot of problems,
if they are to fully comply with the act. The
Moreton Hire partnered with George
P Johnson (GPJ.COM.AU) late last year to
deliver a new approach for Sydney’s iconic
event venue, Fleet Steps.
Featuring Moreton Hire’s Arcum
marquee, the Fleet Steps were transformed
to host a 350pax gala event on Sydney
Harbour. The red-carpet sit down event,
was styled using Moreton Hire’s new range
of premium furniture including Pedrali
Pasha Chairs. Tables were set with boutique,
signature linen and crystal Reidel glassware
for a platinum finish.
However, it was the Arcum curved
good news is there is a lot of work being
done to ensure the building authorities
and government are aware of the problem.
The unfortunate news is, the wheels turn
slowly. The best advice we can offer at the
moment is to make sure the event organiser
is aware the compliance with the act is their
responsibility. Encourage them to have a
report prepared.
I’m sure 2013 will have a similar range
of challenges and opportunities for both
triumphs and tragedy. Let’s hope and plan,
that the good will outweigh the negative.
We have one of the most exciting
conferences ever to look forward to in May.
Make sure you put this in your diary as a
must do.’ We will be conducting another
event dinner’ on the Wednesday night, at
a great location very close to Luna Park, so
make sure this is also part of your plans.
I hope everyone had a safe festive season
and here’s to a prosperous New Year.

New look for Fleet Steps
marquee with the iconic Sydney backdrop
that stole the show, Commercial Manager
at Moreton Hire, Tim Coupland, said.
““
The Arcum marquee is definitely the
structure of choice for organisers who want
to create a lasting impression.
The Arcum is the ultimate in space
functionality, and the curved roof combined
with solid or glass walls offering a seamless
front and tight finish.”
The National Events Manager at Moreton
Hire, Ian Hoath, said their team worked
meticulously to ensure no detail was over
